Problem

Evolving an industry steeped in tried-and-true methods and a generations-old culture of independence is no small undertaking. To do so, Luke’s partnered with Council Fire and the Island Institute, in pursuit of broad-sweeping changes to combat climate change. The first step is to help the company become carbon-neutral in its own operations.

Next steps are focused on efforts to decarbonize the entire New England lobster industry with an eye to ultimately blazing a path for the sustainable future of all American fisheries.

Council Fire leveraged its industry knowledge, relationships, analytical expertise, and communications skills to support Luke’s critical efforts.

As part of this effort, Council Fire:

• Developed recommendations to reduce Luke’s greenhouse gas emissions.

• Assessed Luke’s Lobster’s unique lobsterman-based supply chain, focusing on actionable and culturally-sensitive recommendations for improvements.

Moving forward, Luke’s is leveraging Council Fire’s recommendations to:

• Assess, prioritize, and implement actions to reduce its emissions.

• Plan for tailored engagement, education, and communications with fishermen, regulators, elected officials, and supply chain actors.
