ADVISING A PREEMINENT FOUNDATION & STRENGTHENING COLLABORATIONS FOR HEALTHY OCEANS

Protecting Oceans & Communities

The Walton Family Foundation is a family-led foundation that tackles tough social and environmental problems with urgency and a long-term approach to create access to opportunity for people and communities. As part of its multi-million dollar investments, WFF has focused on protecting oceans and rivers and the livelihoods they support, for the benefit of people and the environment. These efforts include making commercial fisheries more sustainable by promoting good management concerned with protecting ecosystems and building economically thriving coastal communities.

  • In South America, the Walton Family Foundation has been focused on both policy and market innovations in an effort to provide foundational capacity for sustainable fisheries management. The long-term goal is to increase the availability of sustainably-harvested products while also driving consumer awareness and demand for sustainable seafood choices. The specific challenges are significant and wide-ranging, but at the core, the lack of frameworks, tools, and resources for good governance results in opaque and informal value chains and illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. This in turn threatens the economic and environmental future of important fisheries and the communities that depend on these resources.

  • Working in close collaboration with WFF and numerous international and in-country conservation organizations, Council Fire is:

    • Guiding the development and implementation of a coordinated strategy and building enhanced collaboration between WFF grantees operating in key South American countries.

    • Providing insights related to viable traceability and accountability systems for country-level application to support the enhancement of a sustainable seafood marketplace.

    • Supporting identification and pursuit of additional financial resources to leverage WFF investments.

    • Increased collaboration amongst WFF’s South American grantees.

    • Development of a shared strategy amongst grantees to ensure coordinated, comprehensive and efficient use of WFF investments.

    • Helping secure $8 million in new funding by bringing USAID into the collaborative effort.
