B Corps Partnering to Address Climate Change Impacts

Over the past several years, the near and long-term impacts of climate change have come into sharp focus and it is clear that no business sector will be spared the negative consequences. This reality is front and center for Council Fire and the B Corp community as a whole as we work to build sustainable and equitable economic, environmental and social systems in the face of a rapidly changing climate. We’ve recently joined forces with Luke’s Lobster, a New England-based B Corp working to preserve and strengthen coastal communities by providing the world's best-tasting, sustainably sourced seafood. We are thrilled to be collaborating with this innovative and forward-thinking company to address the dramatic impacts of climate change on the seafood industry in Maine and around the world.

The need is clear - Luke’s home waters in the Gulf of Maine are warming at a faster rate than 99% of the world’s oceans. As a leader in the sustainable seafood sector and a company deeply committed to preserving fishing in the coastal communities in which it operates, Luke’s is eager to dissect the problem and implement solutions.

In collaboration with  the Island Institute, Luke’s is partnering with Council Fire to assess the carbon footprint of its products in Maine and across the globe, identify supply chain hotspots that create the most emissions, and prioritize top improvements to help the company on its path to a Net Zero carbon footprint. Of course, our warming climate demands a systemic response, so the work won’t stop with Luke’s operations. Island Institute plans to use the findings from this assessment to work with Luke’s, fishermen, and the whole lobster supply chain to implement clean energy and efficiency efforts where they matter most.

Be sure to follow the progress through Council Fire, Luke’s Lobster, and Island Institute webpages.
