Prime Group and Wunder launch national solar rollout
Prime Group Holdings LLC and Wunder have begun a national solar deployment across Prime Group’s self-storage portfolio, with the first projects now interconnected and starting to deliver power in several states.
The initial phase includes rooftop solar systems at Prime Storage properties in Rhode Island, Connecticut, California, and Maryland. According to the companies, the effort is part of a broader portfolio-wide program aimed at turning rooftop space across Prime Group’s self-storage sites into clean energy infrastructure.
Prime Group is deploying solar systems that it owns across its national Prime Storage portfolio, while Wunder is managing the systems. The companies said the initiative is intended to enhance asset performance, create incremental property-level revenue, reduce operating costs, and support local communities.
Many of the projects are tied to state-based Community Solar programs, which can allow electricity generated from Prime Group rooftops to reach local residents at rates below utility prices. The companies said additional savings may also be available for low- and moderate-income households. Prime Group said it expects the program to help lower energy costs for participating households while also producing energy savings for its own operations.
Across Prime Group’s portfolio of more than 330 assets, more than 100 projects are under development in nine states, totaling more than 38 megawatts of solar development. Wunder said its deployment strategy for the portfolio is shaped by local utility programs and regulations, state-level incentives, and property-specific factors. Each participating property is evaluated to identify a solution intended to support asset performance, sustainability goals, and community benefit.
"We believe on-site energy infrastructure has emerged as a compelling value creation strategy", said Robert J. Moser, Founder, Principal, and Chief Executive Officer of Prime Group. "As a longtime innovative owner and operator in the evolving self-storage sector, we are focused on initiatives that we believe can enhance asset performance and generate incremental income over time. This strategic partnership with Wunder supports the delivery of clean power to the communities we serve, and supports our long-term portfolio strategy and broader strategic objectives."
Wunder Chief Executive Officer Dave Riess said the partnership reflects shared goals around sustainability and operations.
"We are honored to work with Prime Group’s forward-thinking team, who share a commitment to sustainability and operational excellence", said Dave Riess, Chief Executive Officer of Wunder. "For self-storage operators, solar can present an opportunity to accelerate clean energy adoption while potentially reducing operating expenses. We look forward to leveraging our expertise in energy infrastructure to build a strong partnership with Prime Group and support additional long-term value creation across their portfolio for years to come."
Prime Group said that as more systems are energized, the program is expected to contribute to reduced carbon emissions, expand access to renewable energy, and reinforce the role commercial real estate can play in community-focused sustainability efforts.
Prime Group is a vertically integrated real estate private equity firm focused on self-storage and manages approximately $7 billion in gross asset value. As of June 30, 2026, the firm said it owns over 330 storage facilities in 28 states, 3 Canadian provinces and the Caribbean Islands.
